SECTION 1. THE PEOPLE OF SHADOW WORK
An Interview with Mary Ellen Whalen, by Alyce Barry
^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^

Another in a series of interviews with the
      people of Shadow Work.

Co-founder Mary Ellen Whalen talks about her
new path as a Sufi healer and what it means
to her to step away from Shadow Work after
      15 years.

Mary Ellen, or Maryam (pronounced MAHR-ee-um)
to use her Sufi name, is in her third year of studies
at the University of Spiritual Healing and Sufism
in California, working towards a master's in
spiritual ministry. "Frankly, I didn't sign up because
I wanted the degree," she says, "I signed up
because I really wanted to learn what they're
      teaching." ...

SECTION 2. LEVELS OF THE SHADOW
A Commentary by Alyce Barry
^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^

"Shadow" can be a difficult concept to
      understand.

Shadow Work facilitators and coaches often
describe shadow as the parts of the self that
have been disowned, denied or repressed. In
other words, the parts of ourselves we are
afraid to show to the world.

By "parts of the self," I mean traits and feelings.
So, for example, if as a child I was criticized
for feeling good about myself, or punished for
feeling angry, my self-esteem or my anger went
      into shadow.

However, if Carl Jung -- the man who first used
the term "shadow" to mean the unconscious
part of the personality -- were listening to me,
he would likely point out that I'm leaving out
several levels of the unconscious mind. ...

SECTION 4. HOW TO BRING CARPET WORK INTO
YOUR CHURCH, by Cliff Barry
^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^

I don't know how many times have I heard
someone say, "I have gained so much from
my work on the carpet, but how can I bring
      this into my church?"

Well, I have been working with a team to find
a way, and it looks like we've found a doorway.
We ran a pilot in February, and folks were
      delighted with the results!

Our model involves a new approach to Sacred
Scripture, which most of our attendees listed
as their "favorite part" of the whole experience.
They were excited and rejuvenated. They saw
how the whole process brought the Sacred
Sciptures to life in a new way.

We are holding a training seminar June 23-25
near Oregon, Illinois, to further develop this
approach. The cost is only $375, including
room and board. For more information, read
      the flyer at

SECTION 5. THREE UNCOMMON FILMS
^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^

      "AS IT IS IN HEAVEN"
      Commentary by Marie-Francoise Rosat

This wonderful picture, made in Sweden, tells
the story of a music conductor who has a heart
attack and decides to go back to the small
village where he was brought up.

Since childhood, he's been looking for "the
music that can open people's hearts." When
he arrives in this little town, he is invited to
be the conductor of a small church choir.

As soon as this charismatic man starts leading
the group, all kinds of emotions, feelings and
behaviors come to the surface from everybody:
hate, jealousy, being a victim, envy, but also
love, admiration and compassion. The choir
becomes almost like a Shadow Work container,
where everyone has the space to live his
      emotions! ...

SECTION 7. FINAL THOUGHTS
^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^

For those of you with spring fever,
picture a sunrise and the morning star...

"For a breeze of morning moves,
And the planet of Love is on high,
Beginning to faint in the light that she loves
On a bed of daffodil sky."

-- Tennyson, from "The May Queen"
