SECTION 1. THE SHADOW WORK BOOK GETS
A NEW TITLE! And Other Book-Related News
^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^

As we mentioned in our last newsletter,
we were taking a look at the title and
subtitle of the forthcoming book on Shadow
Work and wondering if they needed to
      change.

We concluded that the title and subtitle
needed to say more clearly what lay within.

Many, many thanks to all those who
participated in our "test marketing" group!
      Your feedback was invaluable.

And the winner is... (drum roll please)

      "Practically Shameless: How Shadow Work
Helped Me Find My Voice, My Path, and
      My Inner Gold."

      In other book-related news --

Shadow Work founder Cliff Barry is contributing
the book's Foreword. If you're not sure how
a Foreword differs from an Introduction, an
Introduction is usually written by the author or
editor and supplements or introduces the text,
perhaps by suggesting a point of view for the
reader to adopt. A Foreword, by contrast, is
usually written by someone other than the
author who is a leader in the field and offers
a "take-away" idea of its own.

At the website for Practically Shameless Press,
you can order a signed advance copy. We're
offering free shipping only until we receive
printed books, so don't forget to place your
      advance order!

SECTION 2. MORE TESTIMONIALS!
^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^

We've asked some of our Shadow Work
colleagues, and peers in other disciplines,
to read the manuscript and tell us what
      they think.

And we've been very gratified to get these
      wonderful testimonials!

"Written with simplicity and incredible depth,
Alyce takes the very complex concepts of
Shadow Work and creates a doorway for
both the beginner and the experienced
      Shadow Work folks. Practically Shameless
touched a place in me in a way that I have
not touched before, and I have done lots of
Shadow Work! If you want to take the risk
to open up to new possibilities of deepening
into your life and widening your horizons,
read this book. Your life will be transformed."
Char Tosi, Founder, Woman Within Training,
      Couples Weekends, and Mother’s Shadow
      Workshops.

"This is the story of one woman's journey
from a life of imprisonment in a box of self-
doubt and shame to a life of self-confidence
and freedom. I couldn't put it down; I was
cheering on this courageous woman as she
fought for her life and won." Lyman Coleman,
author of Serendipity Bible for Groups and other
      books

"I loved reading it, found it engrossing from
beginning to end. Alyce's openness about
herself and the Shadow Work processes,
along with her excellent ability as a writer
to 'paint a picture' with words, will make
this book a success." Mary Walilko, web
designer and editor of Heartbeats and
Heartsongs, the Women In Circle newsletter

SECTION 3. AN EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT FROM
"PRACTICALLY SHAMELESS" BY ALYCE BARRY
-- FOR NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIBERS ONLY
^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^

The following excerpt is from Chapter 12,
"A Way of Loving." I had just returned home
from a visit to see family in Wisconsin, where
I had encountered once again the painful
feeling that I didn't belong in groups of women,
even women with whom I had a lot in common.
I had come to the conclusion that I needed to
let go of something. Using the Shadow
Work tools, I set out to discover, in my
living room, what that might be.

"I pictured myself sitting in a group, belonging
but telling myself that I didn't. I brought a large
stuffed bear from my daughter's room and
placed it a few feet in front of the pillow. Its
color seemed to be a rainbow. I wrapped a
piece of rainbow-striped fabric around the
      bear's shoulders.

How was belonging in a group like a rainbow,
I wondered? Because with women friends, I
wanted to show all of myself, even the critical
part of me. I wanted to know that if I said
something critical by mistake, I could apologize
and still belong, instead of shaming myself and
fleeing. I wanted to use all the colors on my
palette as a person even if some of them
      involved making mistakes.

As I stood back to survey the scene, the
bear's rainbow cloak reminded me of an artist's
palette of many colors. I remembered that I
also wanted to let go of my daughter being
an artist. It was her choice what to do with
her life, not mine. If she didn't want to take
ceramics classes any more, that was her
business. Somehow, the feeling that I didn't
belong in a group and my daughter being
an artist were connected, though I didn't
      know how.

An artist can make mistakes, too; she can
start over again with a fresh canvas. The
rainbow bear was the Artist: my daughter the
artist painting colorful clay pots, and myself
as a girl revealing all of herself in a group.
The Artist was saying, "I can mess up, and
      it will be okay."

      MAKING A MESS

As I looked at the Artist, it occurred to me
that an artist needs something to draw on.
I got a piece of blank paper and some
colored markers and placed them in front
      of the bear.

The colors looked bright and cheerful in a
room suddenly drab by comparison. They
seemed to call to me. I wondered what it
would be like to play the Artist.

I took the rainbow fabric off the bear and
draped it around my own shoulders, moving
the bear to one side. I sat down on the
floor where the bear had been and took a
green marker in one hand. I scribbled on
the paper and felt laughter bubbling up from
inside me. I laughed out loud and scribbled
harder, until the paper was a mess of
      colored streaks.

On impulse, I crumpled the paper into a
ball and threw it across the room. How fun,
to make a mess and throw it away! I did it
again: I scribbled all over a piece of paper,
crumpled it into a ball, and threw it across
the room. I burst out laughing, feeling
more free than I'd felt in a long time."

SECTION 6. THE MORE YOU DO, THE MORE YOU
CAN: THE CUMULATIVE EFFECT OF SHADOW WORK
With a Photo Essay for Summer, by Alyce Barry
^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^

It's not something I say to every client, but
it's true: Shadow Work has a cumulative effect.
Each piece of work builds on what came before.

The more Shadow Work you do, the more you
can - the more you can be, the more you can
see, the more you can feel, the more you can do.

One reason I don't say it to every client is a fear
that it will sound discouraging, as if I'm saying,
"You've only just scratched the surface, you
know - there's a lifetime of work here for you to
do!" (Read: "That you should do.") ...

SECTION 7. FINAL THOUGHTS
^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^

      "And I have felt
A presence that disturbs me with the joy
Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime
Of something far more deeply interfused,
Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns,
And the round ocean and the living air,
And the blue sky, and in the mind of man."

      -- William Wordsworth
